How much does central AC cost in Los Angeles?

Short answer: $6,000 to $10,000 for a like-for-like replacement, $9,000 to $16,000 for a full system, more if the house needs ductwork. Here's what moves the number and how to avoid paying for the wrong system.

The ranges

These are the ranges we quote across Norwalk, Downey, Whittier, Fullerton, Anaheim, and the rest of our service area. Every house is different, and the phone estimate is free.

  • Condenser and coil replacement: $6,000 to $10,000
  • Full system (AC plus furnace or air handler): $9,000 to $16,000
  • New ductwork for a house that never had it: $4,000 to $9,000 on top
  • Ductless mini-split, one zone: $4,000 to $6,500
  • Multi-zone mini-split, three to four heads: $10,000 to $18,000
  • Electrical panel upgrade, if the old panel can't carry the load: $2,500 to $5,000

What moves the price

Size first. A 1,200 square foot postwar tract home in Norwalk and a 2,400 square foot two-story in Fullerton are not the same job. Then efficiency: a 14 SEER2 unit costs less up front than an 18 SEER2 heat pump, and the higher number earns it back on the summer bill over about five to eight years.

Ducts are the hidden one. If the existing ducts leak, which most 1960s ducts do, the new system is only as good as the duct test. California requires HERS testing on most replacements, so you'll find out either way. Better to price the duct sealing up front than get surprised.

The quote that should make you nervous

Nobody measured the house, and the quote came off a chart in the truck. That's how you end up with a 5-ton unit on a 3-ton house, short-cycling and never pulling the humidity out. Ask for the load calculation. If they can't show one, get another bid.

No permit in the price. An AC replacement needs a permit and HERS testing in every city we serve. Skipping it voids the manufacturer warranty and shows up at resale. Our price includes both.

Repair or replace

Over 12 to 15 years old, uses R-22, or needs a compressor: replace it. The new unit cuts the electric bill enough to matter, and R-22 refrigerant costs more every year. Under ten years and the fix is a capacitor, contactor, or fan motor: repair it. We'll tell you which on the phone before anyone drives out.
